How to Create a Collected Home:
5 Designer Tips for a Timeless Interior
There’s a certain charm to a home that feels like it has a story to tell, don’t you think?. The most beautiful interiors feel collected, comfortable, and personal, as though the rooms have evolved naturally over time. For those of us who love the timeless character of New England homes, this approach to decorating can be especially appealing. Classic pieces, natural materials, unique details, and a relaxed color palette can create a home that feels polished without feeling contrived. Today, I am going to share with you how to artfully design a home that reflects your life versus replicating a showroom that could belong to anyone. Here are five designer tips to get you started.
1. Don’t Match Everything
Really, I mean it. This is so important. Do not buy the set! Don’t buy everything in the same color. The result is not only predictable, but matchy-matchy everything can also make your home feel tied to a particular moment or trend. The prime example of this in recent history is the “millennial gray” that took over across walls, flooring, and furniture. A coordinated mix, on the other hand, tends to feel more timeless and has the ability to evolve. A beautiful room doesn’t require every piece of furniture to come from the same collection, or even have the same style. Instead, be intentional about using a common thread that connects the pieces. Maybe it’s a consistent color palette, similar wood tones, or complementary shapes. Think coordinated, not matching. Connections, not duplicates. Harmony, not one-note.
2. Layer in Natural Materials and Textures
Texture is one of the secrets to making a room feel warm and inviting. A room doesn’t have to be filled with color to be interesting. A neutral palette can be incredibly sophisticated when there are plenty of textures for the eye to discover. They bring a relaxed, organic quality that evokes coziness. Think chunky knit blankets, grasscloth wallpaper, a supple leather chair, linen curtain panels, a rattan tray on a velvet ottoman. This creates not only visual interest, but a tactile experience as well!
3. Mix Patterns Thoughtfully
Pattern is another wonderful way to create a layered, collected look. Start with a foundational pattern, such as in a rug or larger upholstered piece. Then introduce smaller patterns through pillows, curtains, or accent chairs. Vary the scale: pair a larger pattern with something smaller and more subtle. Repeat a few colors throughout the room to keep everything feeling connected. A stripe and a floral in the same color palette is a classic combination.
4. Incorporate Old and New
The contrast between old and new adds dimension and ensures a space won’t look like it came straight from a box. This is essential for curating that timeless feeling we keep talking about. Vintage elements bring character while contemporary ones make your space feel fresh and functional. Even if you live in new construction, prefer a modern aesthetic and would never step foot in an antiques shop, you can still incorporate a little history into your home with say, a midcentury piece of furniture, a cool vintage camera as an objet d’art, or something from your travels. It is wholly possible to execute a “modern heritage” concept without creating clutter. The idea is to break up uniformity with the juxtaposition of past and present. If you love the charm of historic homes, consider adding architectural details like handhews beams, millwork, or hardware that feels storied. Consider refitting a dresser to serve as a vanity or reupholstering and heirloom sofa. These elements makes your space one-of-a-kind!
5. Let your Personality Show
The goal is to create a home that reflects the people who live there. When furnishing your home, resist the urge to next-day fill your rooms from Amazon, Target, and Wayfair, and take the time to procure pieces that actually mean something to you instead. Wait for the piece that makes you stop and say, That’s it! These thoughtful choices create a home that feels authentic and interesting. Be honest about what you love, and try not to be swayed by passing trends. A collected home should feel like you.
